Danda, D. 1981 Journal Ensatina - Wake Cabin Oct. 5 Left Berkeley at ~3:00 P. with Dave and Mercedes Wake in the Museum 4-wheel drive vehicle. We drove to the Wakes' cabin near Dornington in Calaveras County, Ca. via interstate 680, state Hwy. 4, state Hwy. 160, state Hwy. 12, and again on State route 4 to Dornington. The cabin is at ~5000 ft. surrounded by yellow pine, white fir, incense cedar, sugar pines, and black oak. Arrived at ~7:30 P. The night was cool - ~52°F. Oct. 6 Got up about 8:30 A. and left the cabin at ~9:30 A. to set can traps. Dave explored the day out of the Ensatina hybrid zone near Avery. The hybrid zone concerns platensis and xantloptica. Xantloptica appears to have "leaked" across the central valley and has pushed platensis out of some of the lower, more open areas of forest. Platensis continues to populate the lower areas where they are more damp and more densely forested. The approximate set up is as the following
