near Smith Creek Cave, 5,000 ft., Mt. Thoriz, White Pine Co., Nevada
Itinerary
June 8 Its color was a more or less even pale
brownish tan. I could see no definite
markings of other colors although I
had a very good opportunity to view the
animal for a moment as it paused
on a low boulder to view me. Its running
method of holding its body was similar
to a grey squirrel but it seemed to
arch higher into the air as it ran. I
was at sea as to what it was so
took a long chance of collecting it
before it disappeared. Evidently the
shot was too fine (#10's) to bring the
animal down for in spite of shooting
both barrels at once the animal escaped.
It ran up a ravine full of medium
sized boulders—running around and
climbing over them as it went. At
one time it disappeared under a
very large rock. I thought it had
run down a hole but in a moment
it appeared on the other side and
continued on up the hill. All this
happened in much less time than
it takes to write it, however.
June 9 This morning at about 8:45 o'clock
I had a better look at the animal
I saw yesterday. It was about 50 ft.
