Amosel 1937 Primitive Area, Strawberry Canyon Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Dec. 16, a small hole about 50 yds south of the summit of Monument Hill. At 2:20 I am on the side hill just north of the clear space east of the botanical garden in the Becharis I saw a Spotted Towhee. I saw two Song sparrows in the open space and a number of other birds. These These proved to be Rufous-crowned Sparrows (6). They were quite unmindful of my presence and allowed me to advance within about ten feet of them. When frightened they flew to the brushy side-hill. Caught an adult Song sparrow in trap about 150 yds east of west fence.- It had reddish brown tail & back. Intermediate wren-tit—In Sequoias on south hill. At 3:30 I was sitting at the west end of the south trail. From the sounds in the thickets between here and the Pines there must be ten or more Song Sparrows. I also hehr a Wren-tit. Just saw four birds fly over with a "chip" like an Audubon Warbler— but could not be positive. The bird most in evidence today seems to be the Song Sparrow.
