1937 Primitive Area, S.C., Berkeley Calif.
Oct. 10,
A vireo (Prob. Hutton) was perched in
the top of the oak just above my head.
5:30 P.M. Junco seen on brushy slope
just north of orch. - Much evidence
of mouse digging on this side
hill. Earth of gravelly texture
probably good for Trogognathus
Dung
622 More feces found on trail in
north side of canyon - presented
for "identification". Quite a bit of
gopher sign and in one place some
diggings that could have easily been
ground squirrel was seen on the
top of Monument Hill. A flock of
8 Valley Quail were seen in the
corner near the double fence
closest to the botanical garden.
On the whole the most interesting and
probably the most significant feature
today was the abundance of
Cooper Hawks. From my scanty
observations thus far I would say
that those Cooper hawk probably nested
in this area and some of those seen
are young of the year (as told by
plumage color)
