Dec 2.
Rio del Mar, Aptos, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. 9:20 P.M.
one male collected in center of dirt road. It was
facing east towards a temporary pond. A second

the dirt road but it faced away from pond. 9:35
a third was collected on the road. At this time it

was not raining - had rained for about 3 hours or more
previously. 4th taken O.R. on Bonta Rd only 10 yds from
3rd animal. It had been dead perhaps 3 hours (♀).
At 10:00 pm another was collected on the road facing
north. Air temp 56° F 1" above ground, soil temp. 52° F
1/2" below surface. 10:15 - 6th taken facing away from
pond i.e. west. 11:00 - 7th facing west, air temp 52° F.
A snapping defense reaction noted on this animal. When
disturbed the body was violently twisted so as to
bring head & tail in contact while the body remained
in relatively stationary position. Never less the
reverse 'coil spring action' of Ambystoma.
♀ → ♂. One way quickly - 11:45 2 more
collected on reverse route travelling S → N on
Bonta Rd. Moments later 2 more taken just north
of the home. 11:20.
