June 16 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
11 newly transformed or transforming individuals found at edges of shrinking pond. Standing water reduced to 1 large pool 10-25 yds diameter, + several smaller scattered pools. Greatest depth of water ca 4". Most salamanders were found under vegetation mat in area which have just dried up. 1-3" of mud under mats - plenty wet. Several transforming larvae found at fringe of pools, in vegetation.

None of 11 larvae show adult croceum pattern as yet. Some show beginning of pigment aggregation seen in late development. Actually the lack of pattern make anurals almost invisible in mud.
Other life under mat - swarmin's with insects of every type - mostly small. Tiny, newly metamorphosed Hydropsyche everywhere.
A large, dead Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi seen near collection spot. Mallard Ducks about.
All but 3 of this sample marked & released.
The 3 non-marked were released also.
