Anderson 1956 Ambystoma macrodactylum May 5. Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Search made for larvae between 2:15 + 3:20 pm D.S.T. The W. end of pond examined by usual dipping method produced no larvae whatsoever. The pond has shrunk considerably. Areas where larvae were very gladious in mist + late mkt are either dry or represented by shallow pools choked with Eleocharis. Extensive grate at this end & also along N side of pond are heavily grown in by Eleocharis. Suitable areas for larvae are now much farther out towards center of pond due to dispersal of Eleocharis. However, pond level has dropped & depth of water at fringe of Eleocharis is still optimal for salamanders. Spread of Eleocharis is undoubtedly related to extent of area of shallow water. Rechecked pond for larvae between 6:15 + 7:45 - obtained 14. Most were collected along N side of pond in vicinity of large willow tree. All tubes in area of sparse Eleocharis and at depth of between 9 and 12". Following data from measurements of these 14 larvae. 61 mm 11" water. 42 mm 11" 63 mm 11 1/2" 39 11" n = 14 56 11" X = 56.28 40 9" 64 9 1/2" 55 10" 63 10" 66 60 ↑ time did not permit 61 depth measurement. 68 but approx. some 55 ↓ or close.
