Feb. 22. Trip to Valencia Fajon Study Area, Santa Cruz Co., Cal.
Left Berkeley at 9 A.M. Arrived Valencia Fajon,
11:30 A.M. after 1 stop in Santa Cruz for lunch.
Sign of much recent rainfall; skies now overcast.
Rain began about a little after noon. It
rained steadily throughout the day & night.
A thorough search was made of the "pond"
area. No standing water as yet although the
soil was spongy & soaked water in places. No
salamanders found here. 1 adult, gravid F-F
located in oak woods, marked & released. Left
Valencia at 3 pm and checked "La Selva Beach"
locality. There is some standing water here
(see fieldnotes spec. account). Found 1 new Cambrystoma.
Later I visited Mr. Edwards who owns this
land & gave his permission to work at the
locality anytime. He mentioned that a friend
of his has a pond on Spring Valley Road
about 1/4 mi W of his pond. He reports that
large black salamanders with "yellow" markings
are found in this when it is drained. These
could be A. trivirum if they are as large
as he claims. The dead trivirum found last
year was close to Spring Valley Road. Mr.
Edwards may be very helpful as study proceeds.
After supper returned to Valencia. Worked Bonita
from 6:45 to 8:40 - marking 12 & & + 3 F-F. Want
to "La Selva Beach" area & collected 3 & &
