Jan 25. Valencia Canyon & Southern Santa Cruz Co, Calif.
Canyon at 3 pm. Rain very heavy & steady. After
Dark 10 & macrodactylum + 3 or ? more captured
marked & released. All of these were in prime
breeding condition & all were moving towards the
"Canyon" from the oak woods - 1 jiv was not marked,
it was moving from the pond towards the oak woods.
Interesting factor is that the main wave of juveniles
had passed long before the adults began their
breeding migration. Are there two sets of stimuli
involved - could be either a temp or a rainfall
threshold involved. Cannot discount the effect of
the "unseasonable" early rain. Perhaps the adults
must be at "sexual" peak" before they move & the
first rains were too early to hit this. Should be
checked.
Rain stopped at 9:15. I thought it best to
check other cross-road clock - before it became
too dry. Did this with no more negative results.
Saw several Cercidris liegubis and 1 Eusatinia
on San Andreas road. No Ambystoma activity.
Left for home about 10.
