J.D. Anderson 1957 60 Journal Jan. 24. Valencia Lagoon & other parts of southern Santa Cruz Co. Calif. Left Berkeley shortly after noon. There were showers throughout the AM in Bay Area & rain the previous night. Arrived in Rio del Mar at 3 pm. No sign of rain that day but ground was moist from previous days rain. Checked the lagoon & found it to be dry - yet! 1 gravid & macrotactylum located in clump of willows along north edge of "lagoon" area. No others found despite rather intensive search of willows & the oak woods. Drove to the Ja Selva Beach (Ellcott) locality. It too was dry but found 1 ad. ♀ in breeding condition in a clump of willows. After dark the entire Valencia Lagoon study area was searched with Coleman lantern. No Ambystoma found. 1 Cereider lugubris (ad. ♂) seen. No rain & rather low temp. Traps line (75 museum species) set in Oak Woods and Bocheria edge situations. 6 Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 P. californicus & 2 P. truei collected in woods. 3 Reithrodontomy megalotis (2 in oaks, 1 in Bocheria) collected. Jan. 25. Began raining about 9 AM & continued until 5:30 pm. Thereafter intermittent heavy showers until 9:15 pm. Drove S & W to Watsonville, mainly by way of farm roads. Saw several possible Ambystoma localities. Best was just N & W of Ja Selva Beach locality & been looking into. Returned to Valencia
