Oct 29 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif
Left Berkeley at 5:15 pm (PST) in a heavy rain.
Drove south on Bayshore Freeway to Sunnyvale
and then on 9 to Saratoga & Los Gatos. Took
17 across Sta Cruz Mtns and then Rt. 1 to Rio del
Mar. No rain from San Mateo to Los Gatos.
Heavy rain in Santa Cruz mtns & along coast.
At Valencia Lagoon everything was very wet. Large
paddies in Bonita Rd. 15 Ambystoma macrodactylum
taken on Bonita Rd. Others were marked & released. 1 Ambystoma
taken on the highway directly opposite the center of
the pond area. This one capture showed clinch
the idea of random dispersal. 6 Ensatina seen on
Bonita rd (5 ad, 1 juv.), 2 Batrachoseps (1 ad, 1 juv)
also. Hyla regilla active everywhere, mostly
juvenile seen. 1 Hyla calling off in the oak woods.
At 11 pm (PST) I left the lagoon to drive to
another pond south of here (along San Andreas Rd.)
1 Ambystoma collected on San Andreas Rd. 3/4 mi.
S.W of the jet with Rt. 1. To the west of Rd
here there is a depression which could hold enough
water to be a temporary pond. This animal
could of course lie from the Valencia population,
although it was moving in the opposite direction.
No further Ambystoma were seen on this road for
as far as the pond 1.5 mi SE La Selva Beach. Returned
home to Berkeley at 1:45 AM (PST)
