J.D. Anderson 1959 Ambyloma m. croceum May 17 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Janus cell taken in or near large clumps of Potamogeton. Bottom muddy - no Eleocharis growing here. Temps recorded - 8 larvae at 17.4°C. 2 larvae at 18.0°C, 10 larvae at 17.0°C. Conchostraca, Notomatida, Eorixids, ostracods quite abundant. 1 larva in process of loosing gills, lost all good larvae. Dora aurora & Hydra rajella not transforming. Small newly transformed H.rajella thick at edges of pond amongst Eleocharis. Day cloudy & overcast. May 17 4mi.NW Ellicott R.R.Sta., 4mi.W.Waterville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif 3 adults collected under logs in willow thicket. 1 found in a cavity - obviously fashioned for itself under a log 3ft long x 6" diameter. cavity 4" from ground level, at side of log in a clump of dirt. Three 3 sides formed by dirt, one by log. Under a spreading willow, about 80% canopy cover & probably some all day long. Salamandra coiled up. moist dirt willow log. salamandra cavity long root, log gave 2" salamandra
