Amblystoma m. croceum
April 12 Valencia Fagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Collected 30 larvae at NW end of pond area, using dip net. Cell in shallow (6-10") water & near clumps of Eleocharis & Polygonum. By working up to a clump of Polygonum through open water and then sweeping net into the clump it is possible to catch 3 or 4 larvae per sweep. They do use clumps for hiding place & forage out from there for feeding. Temp recorded 6 larvae at 16.0°-15.5°C, 5 at 15°C. No temp data recorded for remainder at time of capture but all temps ranged from taken in the area ranged from 14.5° - 16.0°C.
April 12 ½am: NW Elliscot Rd Sto., Ymri. Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
2 larvae taken in 8" of water in Elliscot Pond. Temp recorded: 21.0°C, 22.5°C. Worked pond for 1½ hrs - 2 persons - but got only the 2 larvae + no tigrinum larvae. Hydr tadpoles very abundant. Larva canorus tadpoles common.
2 adults taken from under willow logs in the willow thicket adjacent to the pond. 1 & cl. temp 14.6°C. Both animals very sleek & well fed. Canopy cover on 75% & 85% for this two. Soil sample taken for me. The other rested on decaying leaves & rotting wood.
May 17 Valencia Fagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
