March 30 Lemi NW Ellicott RR Sta, 4 mi W Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co, Calif
Collected 9 adults under logs, boards, R.R ties \nfallen willow branches in willow grove edge of Ellicott Pond. Thermal data: d. temp - 16.0,
12.7, 13.8, 13.0, 13.0, 12.0, 14.4, 13.0 °C; temperature
logs (under) - 16.0, 13.0, 15.0, 13.6, 13.4, 12.2, 14.6
and 13.0 °C. Soil samples taken on each occasion.
Two interesting retreats found. 1 under an old willow branch about 3" in diameter, 2 1/2 ft long, embedded about 1" in the soil. About trailing down the branch there was an opening 1 1/2" in diameter which led into a courtly 1" in width & 4" long running under the big branch. The salamander was coiled in a small chamber 3" wide at the end of the courtly.

The other were under a series of 3 flat boards partially embedded in soil. First - about 20" long, 8" wide & 1" thick rested on surface & covered other two. The oth two lay side by side separated by 1". One was 3" thick, 12" long & 4" wide - other about same. One was completely covered by soil; othr 1/2" x 2222
leaves & litter.
