Ambystoma m. croceum
March 1 1/2 mi NW Ellicott RR Sta, 4 mi W Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co, Calif
Renaud's tenebris under large logs. I have now
under a pile of old fence pickets with an adult
Geneices lugubris - first time I've seen the two
together. 1 saw Geneices seen nearby.
Soil samples taken at copse -
March 30. Valencia lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co, Calif.
Series of larvae taken at the NW end of the
pond using long handled dip nets. As usual best
success resulted from working in water 6 - 12" deep
near clumps of vegetation with some open water
surrounding the clumps. Had least results I've
given had working near clumps of Potamogeton. This
may be because the Ellobiaria is later in getting's
started. Thermal data: temps recorded for 14 minute
ranged between 13.0 + 13.5° C. Time 10:30 - 11:30 am.
Light rain falling, by dark with heavy clouds. Ostracoda
in tremendous numbers; Rotatoria & Copepods common
but not yet at pond; no ; Conchostraca
present but not numerous. Hyla x long tadpoles very
abundant. seem to be more Ambystoma larvae than
in previous years.
March 30 1/2 mi NW Ellicott RR Sta, 4mi W Watsonville Santa Cruz Co, Calif
Worked fringes of Ellicott Pond for almost two
hours with R. Graham. Dip netted all around the
pond & took only 1 larvae (A. m. croceum). Don't
quite understand why since conditions seem ideal.
