Ambystoma macrodactylum croceum
Dec. 27 1/2 mi. NW Elliott RR Sta., 4 mi. W. Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Worked in the willow clumps bordering "Elliott Pond"
for 1 3/4 hrs. Collected 8 specimens, under logs & boards.
1st ad. ♂ cl. temp. 12.6°, temp. under log 13.0°C. Taken
under old RR tie, embedded ca 1/2" in sandy soil. Many
isopods ( ) under log. This spot in SE most
corner of willow clump. Canopy cover ca 70-75%.
2nd ♂ at temp. 14.0°, temp. under board 14.2°C. Under
flat board in same willow clump as above,
3rd ♀ cl. temp. 13.6°C, temp. under tie 14.4°C. Under
more covered RR tie near wood pile at E end
willow thicket. Canopy cover ca 65%.
3 more under boards in same area as #3. Cl. temps
13.6°, 12.6°, 14.0°C, temp. under cover 14.0°, 13.5° & 14.0°.
7 more taken under large willow log ca 12' long
(see notes Dec 13 for details). Isopods very
abundant under all boards in area. Saw only
few gir - Hyla regilla - those looked dried out &
quite thin. One or two carabid beetles & 1
Jerusalem cricket made up total animal life.
The rainy date has not brought about any
great resurgence of animal life - though the
croceum have responded some. On Dec 13
I collected 8 here but they were all together
under a particularly buried large willow log &
none were to be found under logs & ties as
in out + today.
