Ambystoma macrodactylum cereum
Dec 13 ½ mi. N W Elliott Rl Sta., 4 mi. W Waterville, Santa Cruz Co.
1 ♂ collected from under small board partly buried in sandy soil of a willow thicket. Board buried about 2".
cl. temp. 15.6°C; soil temp. 14.8; air temp (under board) 16.0°C. Surface soil is extremely dry now. Most small logs & boards on surface retain little or no moisture under them. Frogs, lizards and Ambystoma found only where logs are partly buried.
10 cereum seen (8 collected) under a large, partly buried willow log (12 ft x 1 ft). Log buried ca 4 to 4'1/2". Difficult to move. All salamanders were in a loosely coiled aggregation near the center of the log. Temp under log 15.0°C. Closeal temps & records: 14.0, 14.0, 13.8, 13.8, 13.6, 14.2°C. Soil quite damp here compared to most other spots investigated. A mole burrow (tunnel) open at top in places near down mid line of log impression. 6 of the 8 went into this almost instantly. 2 were never recovered. Several appear to be ♂♂ coming into breeding (vents slightly swollen).
The log under which the aggregation was found was well sealed into soil, very difficult to move. Provide quiet close-to-surface habitat in entire area. Mole workings very abundant; probably many cereum make use of these & other mammal workings.
