Feb 3 Valencia Lagoons, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., California
Left MV2 at 4 pm with C. Thaler, D. McGinnis &
T. Papenfuss. Drive via Rt 17 to Santa Cruz, then by
Rt. 1 to Rio del Mar. Rained most of day in Berkeley.
Sky overcast in Santa Cruz, ground very wet but no
rain. Began working Bonita Pond with Coleman
Lanterman at 6:45 pm. No salamanders active - no
rain. Hyla regilla chorus # at maximum
intensity. At 7:05 we found one gravid & A.
m. croceum at west end of pond, in grassy
area just about to enter pond. Checked
edge of pond for eggs but none were seen.
Thaler & I worked Bonita Rd. zone more
while McGinnis & Papenfuss toured upper road.
They found 1 Onecider lugubris. We found
1 Onecider lugubris, 1 Ensatina eschscholtzi
and 1 gravid & A. m. croceum on the sandy
road. Worked pond edge again & picked up
a large series of Hyla regilla. At 9:15 pm
we drove to the Tigrinum locality, 1 mile
N.W. Ellicott Rd Sta., 4 mi. W. Watsonville.
Here picked up 1 large ad. O. A. tigrinum.
Vast region smaller for breeding. None others
seen. H. regilla in chorus & common. Heard
Screch Owl calling here. Next drove to
Ellicott Pond. Worked entire edge of pond
but saw no salamanders, the water
