J.D. Anderson 1959 Journal March 30 Valencia Lagoons and vicinity, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. series from here & Ellicott to take to Allan Smith at Calif. Acad. Sciencs for identification. Left this locality at 5:00 pm & drove towards Santa Cruz. Ate supper on way. Took turnoff at hi's del Mar towards Aptos. In center of Aptos we took the (only?) road east out of town. Drove along Valencia creek for three miles. Most of way we drove thru good Redwood forest. 3 mi. N.E. Aptos the road makes a sharp U turn & crosses Valencia creek. We stopped here and checked the creek for newts. Ideal habitat - much like coastal Mendocino county. Finding mother's I worked up a small trickle about 30 yds above the creek. It ran down through a well shaded, moist Redwood grove. Two large Dicamptodon ensatus (tiny) taken in this trickle. 12" wide at widest, 4" at narrowest. One back to Valencia for road checks with coloman lantern. Clear, crisp streams, bright stars etc. Began checks at 7:30 pm. 2 checks (4 trips) on Bonita Rd; 1 on Hill Rd. No Ambystoma but we got 2 Ensatina and 3 Hyla regilla.
