Mar. 1
Valencia Sagoon, Rio del Mar vicinity, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley at 7:15 am. Drove via Rt 17 to San Yzaba -
Santa Cruz - then on Rt 1 to Rio del Mar. Arrived 9:10 am.
Worked edges of pond with dip net to check for larvae.
Got about 20 very tiny crocean larvae. Very few
Tadpoles taken as yet. Anacita blooming - Ostracoda
particularly abundant. Eleochanis has not come up
very much. Recent rainfall may be responsible. Eleochanis
usually comes in least as water level drops. Hyla regilla
eggs massed is abundant - early stage to hatching.
Worked here 1/2 hrs, then drove to "New Tiger Pond"-
Loc: NW Ellciff RR line, 4 mi W. Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Worked all around pond - now maximum size. Got
A. tigrinum eggs easily. No larvae as yet, though
many eggs approach hatching. H. regilla eggs in abundance.
11:45 am. Drove to see Mr. Jack Edwards - owner of the
"Ellciff Pond" property. He had 2 A. m. crocean, 1 A.
tigrinum & 4 Cnemidophorus formosus. Calia Cambabona -
Devil Dog; Cnemidophorus - ground lizard. After lunch I returned
to "Ellciff Pond". Worked most of afternoon with dip net -
no luck. Water is deep - slight flood conditions, larvae are
small & tough to net.: nothing. Got 7 adults by
working in willow grove turning logs.
After supper worked Ellciff area with Coleman lamps -
got nothing. Left about 9 pm. Home about 11.
