Feb. 14 Valonia Lagoon, Rio del Mar vicinity, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left MV2 about 8:10 am. Drove via Bayside Freeway,
Hwy Rte 9/17 to Santa Cruz, then south on Rt 1 to Rio del Mar.
Worked Valonia Lagoon with dip net until 1 pm. Hoped
to find small horse but got only 1 nearly hatched larvae
+ many eggs which are close to hatching. Eggs are
in shallower parts of pond near living dead
Eleotharus stalks, as is usual. Very few tadpoles
seen. Only Hyla regilla + these all tiny, newly hatched
larvae. Fresh Hyla eggs seen, though most were
in late stages - hatching. Ostracods fantastically
abundant. Did not see any fairy shrimp. Drove
to New Tiger Pond next (1 mi. N W Ellicott Rd Sta, 4mi. W
Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.). This pond had
filled prematurely in early Jan. + had ad. tigrinum in
it on Jan. It was completely dry on Jan 21 + Jan 24.
But is now full to max capacity - result of recent
rains. Worked this pond from 1:30 - 2:30 pm. Got
fresh A. tigrinum eggs along margins of pond. Many
H. regilla eggs mature - all fresh - only cleavage
to telotula. As usual no adult tigrinum
were taken during day despite turning all banks etc
in the cup + dragging bottom of pond with net.
Drove to Ellicott Pond - 1/2 mi. N W Ellicott Rd Sta,
4mi. W. Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Water
was muddy here. Worked all along edges for
larvae of A. m. croceum + A. tigrinum. Got
only 4 very small tigrinum larvae. Did not see
