J. D. Anderson 1959 Journal Jan 21 Valencia Lagoons, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Sprouts of Eleocharis coming up in shallow water along edges. Not so tall enough to protrude above surface of water. Returned to Valencia at 4 pm & collected a series of grocer eggs between then & dark. After dark checked the funnel traps (set out at 1 pm) at 4 pm - nothing caught. After dark 6:30-8:30 checked edges of pond (& deeper grass) for active Embryotoma with no luck. Water much too cloudy for decent observations - impossible to see bottom in most places. Water temp 8 pm 9.5° C. Drove to "Tiger Pond" just for a check - nothing. Then to Ellicott - no salamanders. Spent some time photographing Hyla regilla & Rana aurora. Hyla chrysos has dropped way off but Rana aurora going in a very strong chorus. Returned to Valencia at 9:30 - checked traps & pulled them in - no luck. One further check around edges produced nothing. Hyla chrysos here very weak - water temp 9.6° C now. Bright nearly full moon shines quite a lot of light. No Rana californis, yet I know they are here. Left for home 10:30 pm. Took RX 17 all way - arrived Berkeley 12:15 am. Excellent time on this route.
