J.D. Anderson 1959 Journal Jan 10 Valencia Sagon vicinity, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Hyla regilla chorusing in the lagoon. More ♂ Hyla than I have ever seen or heard. The extremely successful year last year must be making itself felt. Left here at 8:25 & drove to "Ellicott Pond". Worked in the willows for salamanders on surface but found none. Checked edges of pond but again cloudy water makes viewing impossible. Checked the trap grid but could catch absolutely nothing. The Hyla chorus here is fantastic. Actually hurts the ears. Surface of water looks like it is covered with bellies - vocal pairs of singers ♂ Hyla. Be Caught 2 long, anaura & saw 2 others. Can only hear the hane a few yards away- drowned out by Hyla. Left "Ellicott Pond" at 9:20. Went to "New Tiger Pond" 1mi NW Ellicott RR Sta., 4 mi. W. Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., which was noted earlier in day. A very large chorus of Hyla going here also. Again saw almost all ♂ ♂- only 2 clasping pairs. and 2 enclosed ♀♀. Saw & collected 1A. lignium quickly, saw 4 others - all large ♂ ♂ within a foot of each other & a 5th several gards away. Collected 4 ♂ ♂♂. Spent some more time looking for more lignium and left at 10:30 pm. Drove back to Valencia & made one more road check 12:40 - 11:00 pm Met 1 f A.m. circum & saw 5 Hyla. Left about 11:30 pm & arrived home about 2 am.
