Jan 5 Valencia Lagoos, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
yrd - 7 8" Coccinum all from pond.
After this check I decided to try draining the pool near "Elliott Pond", since it is raining hard & tigrinum might come out. 3 trips - each of approx 3/4 mile near the Elliott locality produced 12 jrs. Tigrinum time 7:15-8:20. Saw approx. same number not collected. Most were moving away from pond but not as clean cut as with coccinum at Valencia.
8:25-8:50 - Drove to pond near beach in Sunset Beach State Park. However, woods were flooded 1/4 or so m' either side of pond so no check could be made. Returned to Elliott at 8:50 & made a check of willow area 8:50-9:35. Saw no salamanders. Torrents of water must have poured thru willow area. Logs were rolled, channels cut & much silt deposited. Checked pond area & all around it - results all negative. Still raining steadily. Cell furrows are filled & pond is now 25 yds x 15 yds.
Drove back to Valencia, raining hard again: made two checks on Bonita between 9:45 & 10:30 pm got 4 8" + 2 4". All from pond. Left for home at 11:45 arrived MVZ 1:45 am.
Notes omitted - Saw 1 Didelphis in willow tree at Elliott. A Fox was seen near willows also - 9:30 pm. Possible Predators.
