J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal Jan. 5 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar and vicinity, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Left Albany at 12:30 pm. Has been raining pretty steadily here since 11 pm last night. Heavy rain all way down. Drived Valencia at 2:30 pm. Steady rain. Checked the willow area, turning logs + raking leaf litter. Soil moist now, leaf litter soaked. Found nothing. Worked a little in oak woods but got just 1 B atrachops. Bonita Dr. is full of large puddles. Water running off hills into pond area at a rapid rate. No water as yet in pond but at present rate it wont take long. Drove over to 1/2 mi. NW Elliott Rd Sta., 4 mi. W Watsonville. Checked from car. There is water in pond area here. The furrows (former ploughed areas) are filled + a small, shallow pond is present at both end 110yds x 20 yds. If rain persists breeding activities will begin shortly. Drove to Edwards ranch to check with owner for night work. He said rain began after midnite & has been steady since then. Ate supper 1st 4:15-4:35. At 4:45 pm with very little light I checked Bonita Dr in driving rain. No salamanders. 2nd Next check 5:30 - 5:50 pm.- very dark; heavy during rain. Saw 15 Hybla regilla - mostly juveniles. Collected 1 juv. A.m. croceum. 3rd 5:55-6:25. Condition as above, rain heavier. Saw another 15 Hybla. Got 5 croceum. All fouriing pond. 4th 6:30 - 6:55.- rain slackened slightly. Saw 8 Hybla regilla + 1 Ensatina eschscholtzii.
