Dec 27 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif
dawned at Valencia at 6:18 pm. The sky was
perfectly clear but the moon had not yet risen.
it was a very dark night. Walked the road in
usual fashion. 3 checks on Bonita and one up
on the hill road. Ensatina eschscholtzii were
very abundant; we saw 19 ad + subads. and
collected 11 - Total of 30. Collected 1 Aneides
lugubris + only 1 Batrachoseps. There were
puddles along the road & the soil was quite
wet. 7r 1 Amblystoma m. croceum taken on
the Hill road check. The usual pattern of
croceum emergence - no rain - no or few croceum.
Ensatina on the other hand will emerge after the
first rains even though it is not actually raining
about
at night.. Moon rose at 7:20 pm. and the
numbers of E Ensatina dropped off. Between 6:18 &
7:20 we saw or collected 26 and between
7:20 & 8 pm saw only 4. Moon was full &
very bright. Left the area soon after 8. After
getting the car we left Santa Cruz at 8:30
driving in Berkeley Hills after 10:30. Took RX
18 17 on return trip. The new stretch of
freeway from San Jose to Oakland make it
a fast trip.
