Dec. 27 Rio del Mar & Elliott, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley at 12 noon with Bob Crupper. Heavy traffic on Bay Bridge & parts of Bayshore Hwy.
Arrived in Santa Cruz at 2:30 pm. There had been very heavy rain in Bay area last nite and obviously there had been rain in the Aptos - Rio del Mar Area. Spoke to residents - the rainfall they described did not seem to be as heavy as the Bay Area. This borne out when we checked under trees in the study area, there were dry spots under leafless willows & soil was only wet at surface.
Worked under willow areas at Valencia Lagoon & found the soil still very dry under logs. Found nothing. Made quick check in oak woods but as usual found nothing. The one can buried in the woods had an adult E Ensatina in it. Very fresh animal, most likely it had been trapped during last night's rain. There was about '1/2" water in bottom of can - some might be due to runoff.
Next drove to Elliott locality - 1/4 mi NW Elliott R RDs, near W L Watassville. We worked here for approx. 2 hour & got P Camlongatoma m croceus from under R Ties, logs etc. The sandy soil here seemed to retain moisture better that that at Valencia.
The croceus must have responded to rainfall a little since they were not directly under the surface objects on Dec. 13. Ate supper 5:30-6:10 pm. Dark at 6. Began work with
