J D. Anderson 1958 Amphistoma macrourum croceum Nov 15 1/2 mi N of Ellicott Rd Sta, 4 mi W Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Worked willow area with Coleman lantern between 7:45 pm & 8:30 pm. Sky clear, stars & moon bright. Had been a shower between 6 pm & 6:30 pm. Ground wet but not soaked. Air temp 7° C. Saw no salamander at all on surface despite careful search of entire area. not smelled earlier in day. 2 pm, I ad B collected from under the bktie in clearing at edge of pond. Cl- temp 10.0, temp under log 12.0° C. Salamander was at edge of mole run (fresh). It scented towards the sun when exposed. Towards 4 pm. Hydra regilla under log also. 8:10 pm. Checked under the same bktie 6 hours after capture of B. Another ad. B seen in exact same spot. This has occurred several times during the study here at Ellicott. Nov 15. Valencia Tucson, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Checked our oak woods & willow area during the day. Found nothing. Saw still dry under most logs. Worked Bonita Dr. with Coleman lantern. Began at 5:45 pm - completely dark but sky clear. Wood check was negative. At 6 pm clouds between 1 & 6:10 it began to rain lightly. At 6:20 I saw a m. croceum collected as it crossed road at wood I & H house. Hedded towards woods (due S by compass). Rain stopped at 6:35. 5 other wood checks were negative.
