J.D. Anderson 1958 Ambystoma m. croceum Aug. 29 Valencia Sagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. 1 juvenile taken in central Willow thicket at 10:45 am. Cl. temp. 17.5, temp under log 17.0. This individual was taken by picking up a fallen, dead willow branch which had one end embedded to 5" into soil. Salamander then under this rotted end + 5" below surface. Soil moist - could be squeezed into a cast. Soil sample moisture content by drying - wet wt - 29.47%. Canopy cover ca. 80% due to overhanging willow limbs. Dense growth of polygonum 5 ft away at edge of willow cover also provides shade from late afternoon sun, so this spot is almost always shaded. Search of other logs, litter etc was not successful. Aug 29 'Tami' NW Ellis Rd Sta. 4 mile Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. 1 juv. taken under fallen willow log at edge of the willow thicket (see map A area for details). Cl. temp 17.8°C, soil temp. 16.5. Air temp under log 19.0°C. This is the fourth juv. taken from under this log in as many trips. 2nd juv. found by turning flat log at edge of willow thicket (Canopy cover 60%), saw its tail protruding from under a 6" x 5" piece of pea bark on ground under log. Cl. temp. 17.6°C, soil 18.0°C, air 19.4°C. 6 juveniles taken from under a slab of bark peeled from dead willow branch on ground. This is same piece that produced 6 juveniles on August 2. It was carefully replaced at that time. Cl. temp.
