Amblystoma macrodactylum croceum
June 20 1/2 mi. NW Elliott RR Sta, 4mi. W Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
1 newly metamorphosed juv. collected under rotted willow branch ~ 1/2 ft x 10" lying on moist soil in willow thicket. Cl. temp. 16.0°C, temp under branch 16.0°C. Branch lying alongside large, dead willow trunk & near large living willow. Canopy cover 70-80%. 20-30 yds to pondedge from here. 31-may the water was only 8-10 yds from this log. This animal has tiny gill stubs remaining. Dorsal color black with faint pattern elements shown's. Underside light as in larvae. Tail with no trace of fin - much like adult. No defense reaction.
Sample of soil from under log taken back to MV 2. 7% H2O determined by wet weight - dry weight. Sample weighted put in oven for 3 hour - reweighed. 30.82% H2O in soil sample.

1 large larva collected with dip net in 6" of water at edge of floating mass of Potamogeton, 10 yds from large clump of tule. Water temp 22.0°C.

8 newly metamorphosed juveniles collected under rotting willow logs between 60 + 90 ft from edge of receding pond. Ground very dry between logs but sandy loam under the logs was moist, though not as moist as soil.
