J.D. Anderson 1958 Ambystoma m. mexicanum notes on pond. April 26 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz C, Calif Water has receded very little as yet. Eleocharis still confined mostly to SW corner of pond. A good area developed there with disjoint patches along S side of pond. Potamogeton green now, Typha coming alive also. Mallard pair still present & active. At least one pair of coots on this pond. Thought I saw a Pied-billed Grebe - not sure. Did see one last trip. A pair of Green Herons flushed from central part of S shore. Those may be predators. Ducks active for first time. Saw a Thamnophis amongst the Eleocharis. Probably looking thru area for Hyla tadps & newly transformed individuals - probably take any Ambystoma they can get. In water there seems to be a slight decrease in invertebrates. Fewer Corixa & notristis this time. No Fairy shrimp at all. However the large Conchostraca are way up in numbers. Ostracods on other ponds appear to be down considerably.
