Ambystoma m. croceum
March 19 1/2pm W. Elliott Rd Sta Yuni, W. Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co.
The opening of a beaver ( Microtus ? ) + about escaped - well used escape route (?) and taken
well into wood pile. Very moist between logs.
Much little & rotted wood between logs. This
animal not on soil but in a niche but slightly
12:15 or longer than its body 1" from free water on
soil surface. When logs disturbed this salamander
pulled back further into its niche + remained quiet.
Cl. temp. 11.8°C, temp in depression 10.0°C. From
the look of this spot - well shaded, sandy loam
soil with good moisture - I would judge that it
would be favorable for a summer retreat.
dotted out lines = other logs removed to
expose Ambystoma.
Actually a layer of 4-5 logs overlies the salamander.
1 Ameides lugenist found in uppermost layer
directly above Ambystoma.
