J. D. Anderson 1958 Ambystoma m. croceum March 18 Valencia, Jaguar, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. todays have come from. Set out as shown below. 3 ft between each trap next. Checked traps at dusk 6-6:30 pm. No salamanders - Got 12-15 hydra tadpoles - several Corixids & Notonectidae, several snails & large ostracods. March 19 Checked traps 8 am this morning & got same results. Final check at about 5 pm. - still no Ambystoma. March 19 ½ mi. NW Ellicott Pkts., 4 mi. W. Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Worked over several old wood piles stacked for at least 5 year in clump of willows just S E of Ellicott Pond. Moved several hundred pickets & logs. Found 2 ad. or juv. close to bottom of pile. 1st found at 11:30 am under large log 4'x 2'x 1' at edge of wood pile. Cl. temp. 13.5°C, temp under log 13°C. Small willow shades logs here almost all day. Log has not been moved for years - sunk into ground 2". Actually a film of water on soil. As soon as log was turned the salamander dashed to
