Amblystoma m. macroceum
March 18 Valencia, Laguna, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Worked West end of pond extensively for larvae between 12:30 pm & 4 pm. Started along S Wedge where eggs were observed on Feb. 16 & March 4.
Found nothing in shallow water near edge where there was no Eleocharis. Got 1 larva in clump of Eleocharis 7 yd from shoreline. Depth 8 1/2", temp surface 23.2°C, temp bottom 18.0°C. Bottom hard - not muddy, 1/2" layer of dead Eleocharis stolks on bottom. Eleocharis growing rapidly - some situation where eggs were found. Water roiled, muddy colored - no visibility at all. Time 2:45 pm
1 egg - c larva well developed & ready to hatch found in same situation today.
2 sm. larvae taken in middle of W. end of pond - opposite shore up road cut. 25 ft from little shore. Water depth 11". Temp surface 19.5°C, temp bottom 14.5°C. Bottom hard - no mud. Eleocharis stolks 1" thick layer on bottom. Water muddy, roiled - no visibility.
Time 3:10 pm. Water 8-10" deeper all around this spot. No Eleocharis in deeper water. Thus it probably is a combination of depth & cover providing suitable habitat for small larvae since Eleocharis is main plant & it seems only to grow in shallow places.
4 pm set 12 funnel traps along S Wedge of pond, near spot where earlier eggs &
