Valencia, Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley between 10:30 & 11 AM. Crossed Bay Bridge & drove S on 1/01 to Alemany Blvld.
West of Alemany to Rt 5 (Skyline Blvd). S on
Rt 5 to junction c-9 thence to Saratoga &
Fox Auto. Took Rt 17 from Fox Auto to Santa
Cruz then on US 1 to Rio del Mar. Spent
afternoon mapping (partially) Bonita Drive &
"Salamander" Rd. Later we climbed up the S facing
slope opposite the collecting locality to photo-
graph the pond area. Took many pictures but
camera was acting up so none may come
out. We then drove S behind the Oak Wood
in in Rio del Mar proper. The entire back
slope is a residential one providing little
in way of cover for Ambystoma. The slope
levels off more gradually than N side. This
way to flat grassy area which are heavily
gnarled. About 1-2 mile S is Monterey Bay.
We next drove out San Andreas Rd
which goes S from US 1 towards the Bay & in
its general direction of Watsonville. A body
batballed O R Ambystoma tigrinum was
found
Then drove on to Sunset Beach State
Park which would be an excellent place
to camp. Saw more Brush Rabbits than
I've ever seen before. Returned to Santa
Cruz for dinner. At 8:15 pm we began
a road check along "Salamander" Rd. 8:30pm
10 feet in from "Salamander" Rd on driveway to
