J.D. Anderson 1957 Ambelstoma m. croceum Feb. 9 'bmi W.Elliot & Sta, Emi W. Watsonm, Santa Cruz, Cal. 11:15 a.m Ellicott pond is at maximum size. Eleocharis shoots coming up in shallow water near edges. Found about 50 eggs of croceum along S E border of pond, adjacent to willows. Eggs laid in shallow water 4-9 " deep. All laid singly on living & dead shoots of Eleocharis. Usually only 1 egg per shoot but found as many as 3 per shoot. When in ?'2 x 3'2 the eggs were always separate, never found outa jelly coats fused. Usually well spaced, at least 3 " between eggs. There were "centers of deposition" however where one might find 6-8 eggs in an area 2ft sq. Then several feet away there would be another similar area, as though the t hen movin while depositing eggs. Eggs almost always laid well off the bottom towards the top of a shoot sometimes right at tip of shoot & rarely closer to bottom than to the top. Several are sketched below as typical. all ( ) eggs in minute , mound both almost completely closed (1st ). Water temp. 16.0 C for almost all eggs. 1 batch (6 eggs) at 13°C. Temp taken at level of eggs.
