Ambelstoma m. croceum
Feb. 9 'bmi W.Elliot & Sta, Emi W. Watsonm, Santa Cruz, Cal.
11:15 a.m Ellicott pond is at maximum size. Eleocharis shoots
coming up in shallow water near edges. Found about
50 eggs of croceum along S E border of pond, adjacent
to willows. Eggs laid in shallow water 4-9 " deep.
All laid singly on living & dead shoots of Eleocharis.
Usually only 1 egg per shoot but found as
many as 3 per shoot. When in ?'2 x 3'2 the
eggs were always separate, never found outa jelly
coats fused. Usually well spaced, at least 3 "
between eggs. There were "centers of deposition"
however where one might find 6-8 eggs in
an area 2ft sq. Then several feet away there
would be another similar area, as though the
t hen movin while depositing eggs. Eggs almost
always laid well off the bottom towards the
top of a shoot sometimes right at tip of shoot &
rarely closer to bottom than to the top. Several
are sketched below as typical.
all ( ) eggs in minute , mound both
almost completely closed (1st ). Water temp. 16.0 C
for almost all eggs. 1 batch (6 eggs) at 13°C. Temp
taken at level of eggs.
