Ambystoma m. croceum
Jan 9. Valencio Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
regilla was sitting partly exposed in one of their
holes. The Ambystoma were in a ball facing in
no one particular direction. The sandy soil
was here, very moist & indeed there was a film of
free water in bottom of pocket. Sand in this area
had enough water to squeeze out. The Ambystoma
were all in fine shape as contrasted to Ensatina
found on surface. These were very desiccated.
see Ensatinia notes 9-Jan. Temp just outside
pocket at surface of soil = 7.4°C. Temp 2"
below surface - approximating level of Ambystoma
= 6.2°C.
Cl. temps of A.m. croceum taken from
this depression: 7.0, 7.0, 7.0, 6.8, 7.0, 7.2,
7.0.

Ambystoma pocket
This pocket was obviously of great value for
survival. The Ensatinia which were excluded
from it were in bad shape from desiccation. In
fact these did not even gain weight when brought
back to laboratory. Did the Ambystoma keep
the Ensatinia out? I'd say yes! There was a
little more room in it & 1 ad of Ensatinia
was sitting at edge, she was in bad shape.
Something about presence of Ambystoma kept her
