J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal Oct 18 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar + "Ellcott", Santa Cruz Co., Calif. This morning rains. No response by the salamanders. Found nothing. Drove over to "Ellcott Pond" 14mi.NW Ellcott Rd to 4mi.W Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co. Worked here for 1'1/2 hours. Turned trap 10 craypums which is about the same number /hr. we have been getting all summer. Basis of this I would say that there were no response by these animals to the rain. Of the 10, 3 were collected for study + 7 more toe-clipped + released. Ate supper between 5:45 + 6:30 pm. Returned to Ellcott at 6:45 pm - completely dark - although stars shone brightly + sky was very clear. Worked for 2 hrs with Coleman lantern but saw no salamanders. Few Hyla regilla + subadult Rana aurora were quite active after dark. Hyla seen on logs + hopping over dry ground. Rana on ground only. Spiders +, Carabids, Tenebrionids + millipedes were active on surface. Stopped work at about 9 pm + drove home. Nov. 15. Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar + "Ellcott", Santa Cruz Co., Calif Left Berkeley at 8 am. Arrived Rio del Mar at 10:30 am. Santa Dr. wet, several small standing puddles present. Worked the willow area, turning logs + checking thin leaf litter. Found nothing. Leaf litter only moist at surface. Dry under logs + 1" in litter. Heavy canopy must keep its light rain from penetrating very deeply.
