J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal Oct. 11 Valencia Lagoon, Birdel Mon and "Elliott", Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Left Berkeley at 5 am with D. Wilhoft. Arrived Valencia 10:30 am, checked around pond area & in oak woods for croceum with no luck - same old story here. Ate lunch & dropped D. off at [illegible] Beach. Worked at Elliott getting 2 croceum in 1 hour. It was cold on Beach so D. joined me collecting. In afternoon work we picked up 12 croceum (total), several of which appear to be adult males. A cold & foggy afternoon. Ate supper at Red Door Inn then tried some work with Coleman Benton. No luck. Left at 9:30 pm & returned to Berkeley ca midnite. Oct 18. Valencia Lagoon, Birdel Mon and "Elliott", Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Heavy rain in Bay Area between 3:30 & 5 am this morning. Weather Bureau predicted more rain for afternoon & evening of Oct. 18. Decided that this might turn into the first big rain & that the Umbrestone might move with it, so I left Berkeley at 1 pm. & drove via usual route to Aptos. Stopped at Red Door Cafe to check with Barney Neal on last meter rain. He said it rained hard & heavy for 1 1/2 hours in morning. At 3 pm. sun was shining brightly - no sign of the predicted rain. Drove to Valencia Lagoon. Checked all loza in willow area & made a cursory check in oak woods. Around damp in places. Still dry under trees & soil under loza remained [illegible]
