Sept 23 Mosquito Lakes, 8000 ft, 2 mi. W. Jambot Peak, Alpine Co., Cold.
Left Albany at 5:25 am. Drove via US 50 to Stockton and then on State Rt 4 towards Elbert Pass.
Ran out of gas about 3 mi. W. Altaville. But got a quick ride in for gas with a Mr. Monteverde.
Sort little time. Arrived at Big Meadow, 6500 ft, Calaveras Co. at about 9 am. Pond is entirely dried up (see note Aug 20, 1958). Ground wet from rain last night. However it was very dry under all litter, logs etc. Searched for juvenile Cambyctoma for quite a while with no luck at all. Probably all have moved down to escape dessication. Even most favorable areas are bone dry. It is cold today 9.50 C. but I doubt that this is a factor. The past few weeks have been extremely warm and dry.
Drove to Mosquito Lake locality. Ate lunch at 11 am.
From about 7400 ft up there is a slight cover of snow on ground - almost 1" in some places. Snow on all limbs of trees. All the higher peaks all around this spot. Air temp. 2 ft off ground 10.0 C., , temp 1" above ground 7.50 C. Many of the shallow areas of the ponds here are covered by a thin film of ice. Must have been a miserable night last night. Sky very cloudy - It may be snowing on some of the higher peaks right now it will probably snow here tonight. Might
