Sept. 13 Valencia lagoon & Elliott Pond, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley at 7 am with D. Wilkoff. Drove via usual route to Rio del Mar. Valencia lagoon area is now very dry. Search for Ambystoma was fruitless. A new home is being built at the junction of Hill Rd & Bonta Drive. Flora but surely the study area is being ruined; croceum numbers closer to extinction.
After lunch drove over to get the "Elliott Pond" - 1/2 mi. Nw Elliott Rd (40, 4mi W Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co.)
A thorough search of the willow area produced 11 croceum, including at least two adult animals (judging by size). One of these is definitely a J with an enlarged cloaca area - not large enough different to distinguish it as a J but not swollen of breeding season. Worked until late afternoon getting temp data & soil samples. In the evening work with Coleman lantern was negative. A bright, dry night - star shining.
