J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal Aug. 20 Trip to Mosquito Lakes, 8000 ft., 2 mi. W. Footbut Peak, Alpine Co., Calif. Left Albany at 4:50 am. Drove via Tunnel Rd to Pleasant Hill & picked up Tom McIntyre. Drove to Dublin + then US 50 to Stockton. Took Rt. Rt 4 from Stockton. Stopped 4 mi west of Altaville, Calaveras Co. Collected 2 Sceloporus occidentalis and 1 Rana boylii here. Continued along Rt 4. Saw 1 DOR Charina bottae approx 2 mi. E. Camp Cornell, Calaveras Co., Calif. 10:30 am began work at Big Meadow, 6500 ft., Calaveras Co. The snow pond here is almost completely dry now. Only a small, shallow (5" greatest depth) remnant 15 yds long x 8 yds wide left. Larvae in metamorphic stages present in this pond. Newly transformed juveniles are fantastically abundant under boards, logs, bark & other debris in the pond area. Collected approx 60 in less than a half hour. 11:30 am went moved east on Rt 4 to Mosquito Lakes, 8000 ft., 2 mi. W. Footbut Peak, Alpine Co Calif. Ate lunch and began work here about 12:30 pm. In pond #1 both sizes of larvae were abundant + readily visible on the bottom. Last trip (Aug 6) the small larvae were not easy to see or collect. Took a series of both size groups + kept some of larger ones alive for experimental work. In Pond #2 small larvae only present + there in very great density. Took a sample of those 20+ picked + 20 kept alive. Took a small sample from Pond #3. Larvae were not so
