July 20 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley at 8 am with D. Wilhoft. Drive via usual route. Arrived at Rio del Mar 10:15 am. The pond is now completely dried up. Spots which were pools last trip (5-July) are now cracked, hardened mud in open areas; softer, moist mud near vegetation.
Worked willow clumps, cattails & tule clumps for newly transformed anirish - saw only styela cozella.
Spent 2 hours or more at this. After lunch we worked Ellicott [illegible] willow thicket near the pond, each getting three specimens. Behavior of these young anirish is quite different now. When first emerging from water & exposed by turning a log they just sit quietly. Usually will not move unless poked. Now there is a definite escape attempt. 2 of six taken today attempted to escape down rodent(?) burrows. Others sat quietly for 5-7 min then slowly crawled towards some litter. They probably rely on protective coloration just so long, then attempt to seek cover slowly without being seen. Remainder of day spent checking two areas or ridge swamps SE from Valencia. No luck. Weather was again foggy & cool but not really wet enough to dampen ground.
