J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal July 24 Carson Pass & Vicinity, Cal. to go back over Carson pass & play it safe until we could get repairs & have a spare tire. Drove west on 80 to the actual pass. Checked a pond right at the pass. Looked like a good spot - small snow pond 15 yds diameter Lots of fallen logs etc. Got nothing. However the water is slightly fouled due to litter thrown in by litterbugs. Drove west to 4 mi. E (by Rt 89) 1800ft., Kiabwood 8000ft, Alpine Co worked the pond cited earlier. Saw 5 small macrodystylum larvae. Water deep, muddy bottom. Could only collect 1 as a locality record. Continued on 80 west to Carson Spur, 8000 ft. Worked a large (60 yd x 30 yd) pond. Bottom very muddy. Many logs in water. Rain's again. Neither work in waters nor turning logs produced salamanders. Got 1 Thamnophis elegans (at temp 16.0 C) swimming in pond. Ned Johnson shot several crossbills here. One lodged in tree. Attempted to knock it down with slingshot. All I succeeded in doing was to snap my Schulteis thermometer out of my pocket & smashed it against a tree. Left about 3:15 pm. After some more tire th solder & driving only 4 mph we reached Albany about 11:30 pm.
