J.D. Anderson 1958 Journal July 23 Trip to Carson Pass vicinity, Calif. Red Lake, 8000 ft., Alpine Co., Calif. made camp at east end of Red Lake. Tom McIntyre picked up two adult Bufo boreas at campsite. After supper I worked around N edge of the lake for salamanders. Could find nothing in lake or a small pond just north of the lake. Saw a lesser working near an outlet stream of the lake, and a Black Bear working up a hillside NW of the lake. Several spotted sandpipers were working along the N end of the lake. Activities restricted mostly to large floating logs which were jammed up at this side of the lake. Several Brewer Blackbirds were following these and displaying to them. Seemed like a territorial display on part of individual blackbirds but they would occasionally "nd" around the sandpiper ginn's alarm calls. Sandpipers ignored the display. Rain stopped about 7 pm. July 24 Carson Pass vicinity, Calif. After breakfast I worked around edge of lake once more. Got 1 Bufo boreas ad. 9. Cl temp 17.2° Saw Bufo tadpoles all along lake edge. No Ambystoma lacore. Worked hillside & wet area near lake - no salamanders. Left this area at 10:45 am. Began driving east to go to Elbert Pass. Got a flat tire just past Hope Valley. Since there are no service stations to repair tires above Elbert Pass Rd, we decided
