Journal July 5 Valencia Lagoon, Bird del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Predation on croceum & also proof that the A.m.c. probably use the mats for cover. They would be quite at the mercy of snakes under mats. Next tried crawling into the very thick clump of Tule ( ). About 15 feet in through the tule we met a pile of reeds, very moist stalks was found. Pile about 12" high & 20" wide. Broke through it carefully found 1 small, newly transformed croceum about 3" from bottom. Cl. temp. 15.5°C, temp. in pile 15.5°C., temp 1" above pile 17.5°C. In a second pile about 1/6 from first another croceum was taken. Did not want to disturb the habitat any further so stopped this. Really glad to find where the little croceum are going as the pond thins up. Stopped work here about 1:30. Ate lunch 1:30-2. Dropped D. off at beach & chowed to Ellicott for dip net work. 1 1/4 hrs work yielded nothing. Later on we worked the willow grace of Ellicott pond & got 6 newly metamorphosed croceum. D. got 3 & I got 3. After dark, work with Coleman lantern was negative. Drove home thru very heavy July 4 traffic.
