June 28 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Left Berkeley at 7:15 am with Dot Wilkoff. Drove to Rio del Mar by usual route arriving at about 9:30 am. Began work with dip net almost immediately. Pond has not shrunk much in area since last trip but the level has gone down considerably being 20-24" deep in deepest holes & averaging 8-10" deep. Worked for 1 3/4 hours getting only 1 hawaa. Dot used net too so courage was very good. Spent 1 hour turning logs & mats of vegetation in search of metamorphosed animals but found none at all. In water Notorectia are extremely abundant. Belostoma very common—mostly very large, wingless nymphs. Had lunch 12:45-1:15 after dropping D. at beach for the afternoon. Worked Ellis's Pond with dip net for 1 1/2 hours (1:30-3 pm PDT). Then began search for metamorphosed animals under logs in the willow thicket. First 30 mins. I worked close to shoreline where soil under logs is very moist—got nothing. Hyla regilla jaws in fantastic numbers here. Next worked back towards beach end of willows & began to pick up newly metamorphosed juvenile A.m. croceum about 60-80 ft from waters edge. Recorded c.t. temps and collected soil samples for moisture determinations. Picked D. from beach to help with this. Ate supper at about 6:45. Returned to area & worked with
