Journal June 25 Pacific Shore Summit, 8050 ft., Alpine Co., Calif. west of 1st pond and is on other side of small ridge roughly 30ft high at lowest point. Snow melt off flows to one pond or another off this divide. Lowest point is devoid of vegetation & has but thin soil cover. Granite ridge rises from this point and goes up to 60 ft above pond 1 & effectively separates it from pond #2. Pond #2 is described in detail in sp. accounts. Collected 7 Ambylostoma in #1 in extremely cold water. Most of these taken on bottom exposed to sunlight. Returned to pond #1 to get eggs & larvae. Found large (overwintered) larvae along edges of pond #1. These did not swim about the way I've seen larvae do in this type of pool late in summer. They hid in debris at ponds edge - most commonly under small bits of wood resting on bottom. Found many eggs attached to undersides of logs, branches etc in pond. Finished up work at about 4:15 pm. Wrote some notes & took pictures then at 5:05 pm started back down at 4 (west). 9.6 mi. W of this spot & actually slightly NE (by road) Calawan Colony, Alpine Co., Calif. & stopped at another snow pond 25 yds long by 10 yds wide x 17" deep at deepest point. Caught 1 rather small ad. Ambylostoma. Continued down road, stopping at any pools or meadows but got no more Ambylostoma. Checked carefully at ids Big
