June 20 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
Nymphs of Belostoma but very large. Fewer
all being large adults. These seem most
abundant where there are no Emblestoma but I
did not keep close records. As many as 4 Belostoma
in 1 haul of net. Corixids & Notonectids are
more numerous than ever before. Cochotoceras
present but down in numbers. Snail, as usual, are
most numerous invertebrate. Saw pair of geese &
pair of Mallards. After going for the 3 new larvae
I began a systematic check of newly dried areas
to attempt to find any newly metamorphosed
Emblestoma. Checked under mats of Polygonum
at SE corner of pond, worked under all Willows
along N edge of pond, Polygonum & logs at
NW end and shore at west & finally litter along
edge. Took about 1/2 hrs. but found no sign
of Emblestoma. Lost my Schultheis Thermometer
on this search. Retraced steps & found it is
next to last stop. While walking thru shrub's
Eleocharis & grass at former SW corner of
pond I noticed the area was a maze of
Micratus runways. I've never seen so many.
actually saw 4 or 5 Micratus running about &
heard many more. Found 1 drowned Micratus in
Can trap # 2 night in oak woods. A real
high population here. Ate lunch 12:15-12:45.
Then over to Ellicott Pond to get larvae for
