June 20 Valencia Lagoon, Rio del Mar, Santa Cruz Co., Calif
Left Allany at 5:45 am + arrived at Rio del Mar
at 7:30 am. The dirt roads skirting the lagoon +
the oak woods have been fixed after the long drying
out period following heavy damage this winter. Personally
I wish they wouldn't touch them. Road around pond
(Bayite Dr.) was not bothered much - some holes filled.
The road into the hill area was worked on by a
grader + widened a little although they seem not
to have cut any trees. Some brush which had
accumulated was pushed aside but no major
disturbance. The pond has shrunk considerably
since 31-May. Main area of water restricted to
immediately in front of large willow to edge of
forest (Forest) Ernest willow clumps - see map.
Pattern of recession essentially as in 1956.
Began dip net work for larval sample at 8:15 am.
Got 5 large larvae by 9:10. Returned to car
to transfer these to gallon jars. Worked again
with net between 9:30-10:30 am. Got only 3 more
larvae; making 8 in 110 min. Tadpoles are way
down in number. Newly metamorphosed (Hyla) are
everywhere around edges. Every leaf + grass blade
seems to have its tiny tree frog. Saw 3 or 4 newly
metamorphosed Rana aurora, also caught several
in dip net with 4 legs + partly absorbed tail. Still
quite a few aurora tadpoles which have no
legs. Belastmatite extremely abundant. Most are
